The Heartland Championship competition, known for sponsorship reasons as the Bunnings Warehouse Heartland Championship, is a domestic rugby union competition in New Zealand. It was founded in 2006 as one of two successor competitions to the country's former domestic competition, the National Provincial Championship (NPC). The country's 27 provincial teams were split into two separate competitions. Thirteen of the original teams, plus one merged side created from two other teams, entered the new top-level professional competition, the Air New Zealand Cup (later known as the ITM Cup, Mitre 10 Cup and currently the NPC). The remaining 12 sides entered the new Heartland Championship, whose teams contest two distinct trophies, both named after famous New Zealand players:
- The Meads Cup, the more prestigious trophy, named after Colin Meads.
- The Lochore Cup, named after Brian Lochore.
Het Heartland Championship wordt gespeeld door 12 teams, die zijn verdeeld in twee divisies: de Championship Division en de Division 2. De Championship Division bestaat uit de zes beste teams van het vorige seizoen, terwijl de Division 2 bestaat uit de zes overige teams.
De teams spelen een round-robintoernooi, waarbij elk team twee keer tegen elk ander team speelt, één keer thuis en één keer uit. De beste twee teams van de Championship Division kwalificeren zich voor de Meads Cup, terwijl de beste twee teams van Division 2 kwalificeren zich voor de Lochore Cup.
De Meads Cup en Lochore Cup zijn de twee kampioenschappen van het Heartland Championship. De winnaar van de Meads Cup wordt gekroond tot Heartland Champion, terwijl de winnaar van de Lochore Cup wordt gekroond tot Division 2 Champion.
Het Heartland Championship is een belangrijk toernooi voor rugby union in Nieuw-Zeeland. Het biedt een kans voor provinciale teams om op nationaal niveau te concurreren en produceert vaak spelers die doorgaan om Nieuw-Zeeland te vertegenwoordigen.
